This issues can happens on various operating systems, but the most common issues are with windows 7 and windows 10 slow startup. A lot of computer users with these OS have complains with pc slow startup.
We searched the internet for all the possible tweaks in order to fix this kind of computer issue and have listed here the most effective and well supported by proofs that it really works. Thus, you will surely speed up computer startup.
Disable Unnecessary Programs that Launch at Startup
One of the easiest and most efficient ways of improving the boot process is disabling unnecessary programs during startup. There are 2 ways of doing this. First is the Task Manager and the other one is through using ‘MSConfig’ command.
Access Task Manager
Simply press CTRL + ALT + DEL. This will open the Task Manager Window.
Use MsConfig Command
Press (Windows Icon) + R, then type ‘msconfig’
Both the options above leads to a window where you can disable startup programs which are not that important or ones that you do not need when starting your computer.
Under the status column, you’ll see which programs are enabled. These are the ones that also runs during startup. To disable, right-click the name of the program and choose ‘Disable’.
Do this to all unnecessary programs.
Delay Loading of Specific Services in Windows
On computer startup, there are windows services which are also launched or activated automatically. These services continue to run in the background until computer shut down. A way to reduce boot time is to delay the activation on some of these services. Good thing Microsoft has an option called “automatic delayed start option”.
Click the column name “Startup Type” in order to sort the entries and immediately see those that run automatically on startup.
Delay Startup Windows Services
Double Click a Service then under ‘startup type’ choose Automatic Delayed Start, then click Ok.
Reminder: Do not delay all windows services, only delay those services which can wait for a couple more seconds before starting.
Like the following:
- Windows Firewall
- Windows Image Acquisition
- Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service
- Windows Search
Other Services not Windows Related to Delay
- Adobe Acrobat
- Printer Services like “Epson Scanner Service”
- Google Update Service
- Nero Update
- Other other programs that might be in your system
Install A Reliable Antivirus Software and Keep it Updated
One of the reasons why startup slows down is because of computer viruses. Thus, you have to install an antivirus software to keep it virus free. Again, it’s important to note that it has to be kept updated because new viruses are created every day so your AV software must keep up by updating its virus signature database. Do not forget to do a regular virus scan at least once a month. This is also a preventive measure so you don’t have to deal with stubborn viruses and malware.
Even though we need an antivirus software, I don’t think we need to pay for it. The main reason is that there are free versions of reliable antivirus programs which are good enough. Unless you have very important files on your computer or you use your computer for business, you might want to go for the premium version. But then again for me, the free version is good enough.
Here is the top 5 best free antivirus for 2018
I have personally tried Avast Free Antivirus and Panda so I highly recommend these 2. You can always choose the one which you think is the best after doing some Google search.
Upgrade your RAM
If after the steps above, you still experiencing a slow startup, the best thing to do is install more RAM. The simple idea is your computer would work faster when you have more RAM. So if currently, you have 2GB of RAM, adding 2 more to make it 4 GB would improve the speed of your computer as well as fix your computer startup slow problem. Adding RAM on a desktop computer is pretty easy to do. Watch a couple of Youtube video tutorials and you’ll definitely see how easy it is.
Install a Solid State Drive
When you are planning to upgrade your computer, a good investment to take is on your storage device. If you are still using Hard Disk Drive (HDD), now would be the right time to upgrade to a Solid State Drive (SSD). Doing this is also a common advice on slow computer fix articles.
Here is a nice comparison between the two:
ScanDisk and Defrag
Microsoft already offered ways on how to fix issues relating to slow running computers. This includes instances when the startup is just taking too long. Some of the features already in your operating system worth doing is ScanDisk and Defrag.
It’s a diagnostic utility in Windows operating systems that checks and repairs file system errors on the disk. Such errors cause your computer to slow down and in general affects all the process it does especially startup and writing and reading on your disk.
To do a scandisk, do these steps.
Open File Explorer (Windows Key + E)
Right Click your Drives then “Properties”
On the same windows, you can also choose Optimize and Defragment. An important thing to remember is that Scandisk can be fast, it could only take a couple of minutes to an hour. However, Defragment takes a lot of time from 2 hours or more so make sure that you are willing to wait long for the defrag to finish. If you don’t have the luxury of time for this, running Scandisk will do.
Insufficient Storage Space
In order for Windows to function properly, it needs to have enough space. Check your storage(all your drives C and D) if it still has at least 1GB of space. Storage space below 1GB is already insufficient which greatly affects how fast your computer functions. You need to upgrade storage the soonest if you want to still use your computer without any delay.
